Meet Nick Bright

I’ve always had a passion for dogs, but my obsession kicked off over 10 years ago whilst living in Melbourne, and I’ve been working within the industry ever since.

I began my canine career as a volunteer for Stafford Rescue Victoria and found this work so rewarding. It filled my heart with oodles of love and compassion for these creatures and helped fuel my desire to change my entire profession at the time. Over the following year, I worked tirelessly to achieve my certification at the National Dog Trainers Federation of Australia.

Helping dogs thrive that have previously been let down by humans will continue to be my driving force. I’ve always found the more problematic behaviours very intriguing and love the challenge of helping them achieve a better life.

I currently work as an assessment consultant for Dunedin Dog Rescue, and when I’m not busy with private consultations, I can be found hiking the trails around our city for Dunedin’s premier dog adventure services, ‘Tails on Trails’.

In this role, I facilitate a safe and stimulating experience for numerous dogs in my care. I’m generally handling around 20 dogs per day and work hard within each pack to achieve calm and balanced dogs.

This specific pack training has had a flow-on effect to most of our dogs’ home lives, and our clients couldn’t be happier. Many of them have used my professional services with one-on-one consultations to fine-tune their own training techniques or eliminate some bad canine habits.

I’m excited to offer my professional services in a growing industry to support and educate dog parents so they can build strong relationships with their best friends.

Basic Life Skills

Whether you’re welcoming a new puppy or dog into your home, or you’re keen to brush up on the basics, this is the perfect ‘in-home’ session to connect with your dog at a higher level and fine-tune your training skills.

You will receive full demonstration and coaching on the techniques required to enhance your dog’s behaviour.

Dogs see the world differently to humans, so learn how to interact with them in a manner they understand and improve the bond between you and your dog.
Never underestimate the importance of basic obedience training.

Skills:

Foundation skills (sit, stay, down)
Setting rules and boundaries
Communication and Engagement
Effective recall training
Walking with a loose leash
Calming methods
Eliminate the onset of separation anxiety
How to mentally stimulate your dog
Creating an environment your dog will love
Monitoring and regulating play and stimulation levels
Preparation/Welcoming new family members (2 or 4 legs)

After all sessions I will write up a training plan customised for you and your dog to continue with and my guarantee you can contact me anytime to chat and ask questions about anything your getting stuck on or how to further your training/bonding so we can continue to progress.

Duration: Approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours
Pricing: $250 inc GST.
Additional follow-up sessions: $130 inc GST.

Behavioural Correction

If your dog has developed some unwanted behavioural issues, or you’ve adopted one with a few underlying problems I am here to help.

Examples may include:

Unnecessary barking
Over stimulation and anxiety
Aggression towards dogs and humans
Separation anxiety
Jumping
Uncontrolled behaviour
Pulling on leash
Not coming when called
Fears and phobias (i.e. loud noises)
Destructive behaviour
Inappropriate toileting

I will thoroughly assess your dog’s behaviour, teach you the necessary training techniques, and outline a training plan that works towards a resolution.

How to address them to find resolution
Your dog’s instincts and what this means for you

Day Training Sessions

Whether you are struggling to stack up exposure and experiences around your dog's triggers, wanting to get a jump start on your dog's socialisation, obedience, and behaviours in public, or want to get your puppy out into the real world for some fantastic safe, socialisation and exposure. This is a great option.

Pick up, drop off service
Your dog will spend the time with me and carefully curated pack members with similar behaviour issues to maximise efficiency of our training adventures
Visiting various locations and environments to work around their triggers and problem areas.
We travel from beaches,rivers, forests, cafes, town centres, workplaces, parks, industrial areas, building sites, etc.
Advice given on where and what you need to work on for success in these areas you and your dog are struggling.

Includes video of the day's training adventures.

Duration: Approximately 3 hours
Pricing: Starting at $150 inc GST per session depending on dogs' behaviours.

Other Services

Dog sitting:

Having a dog with behavioural issues and going away on holiday can be very stressful. Finding the right person who you feel confident leaving your dog with without worry can be very difficult.

Contact me for a chat - I have have a few people I recommend, or for the more challenging dogs I may be able to assist myself.

Puppy Classes and Group Classes:
Group classes are a great way to gain experience handling your dog in a safe environment with like minded dog owners who are there to overcome various behavioural issue’s, have fun, and bond with their dogs.

All classes are on leash/ longline.

Main focus of group classes:

Engagement/handler focus
Impulse control
Reinforcing calmness
Holding commands whilst under distraction.
Loose leash work
Recall longline work.
Correct introductions, and overcoming reactivity
